WORKSHOP GOALS
Every day, students across the nation come to school and say or do things that require school administrators to take action! Actions that may make a difference between life and death!
“The Administrator as Lifeguard” will focus on best practices for recognizing and responding to warning signs that could indicate a student is considering harming them self or someone else.
We are honored to partner with the national non-profit, Sandy Hook Promise (SHP), to give participants an in-depth look at three of SHP’s no-cost, “Know the Signs” violence prevention programs for schools.
Say Something is an education program that provides students with tools and practices to recognize the signs of a potential threat (especially in social media) and teaches them how to take action and Say Something. This session will be presented by SHP staff.
SOS Signs of Suicide Prevention Program (also known as “HERE Now”) teaches students to recognize the symptoms of depression and suicide in themselves and others. Research demonstrates that the SOS Program, which is listed as on Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices, improves students' knowledge and adaptive attitudes about suicide risk and depression, and reduces actual suicide attempts. This session will be presented by San Diego Youth Services.
Safety Assessment and Intervention (also known as the Virginia Student Threat Assessment Guidelines) is a national evidenced-based violence prevention training program which is listed on SAMHSA’s National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices and used in over 1,000 schools and organizations around the country. Our overview of this program will be provided by Bob Mueller from the San Diego County Office of Education.
Appropriate Disciplinary Actions, will focus on the decision-making process school administrators should follow-up to make and support sound decisions, focused on student safety, as a follow-up to threats of harm. This session will be presented by Vicente Bravo of the Los Angeles County Office of Education.
These sessions are intended to increase awareness, preparedness, response and follow-up to prevent, or respond to, major school site events. Our workshop welcomes district administrators, school site administrators, teachers, parents, law enforcement, emergency responders and any other group who would be impacted by a school site tragedy.
ABOUT THE PRESENTERS
Workshop Session One: Sandy Hook Promise – Say Something
Sandy Hook Promise (SHP) is a national, nonprofit organization based in Newtown, Connecticut. They are led by several family members whose loved ones were killed in the tragic mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14, 2012 that claimed the lives of 20 first-graders and 6 educators. SHP is focused on preventing gun violence (and other forms of violence and victimization) BEFORE it happens by educating and mobilizing youth and adults on mental health and wellness programs that identify, intervene and help at-risk individuals.
SHP makes it’s “Know the Signs” educational programs available to schools at no cost.

Workshop Session Two: San Diego Youth Services

San Diego Youth Services (SDYS) is a nationally recognized, non-profit organization that has helped improve the lives of more than 700,000 homeless, runaway, abused and at-risk youth and their families. Founded in 1970 as one of the nation’s first shelters for homeless youth, SDYS now provides services to more than 19,000 children and their families in San Diego County each year. With a mission to help at-risk youth and their families become self-sufficient and reach their highest potential, SDYS works to fight the tragedies of homeless youth and youth in crisis.
Workshop Session Three: Bob Mueller Safety Assessment & Intervention
Known to many in San Diego County as “Safety Bob,” Bob Mueller uses his 35 years of experience working with young people and families to help keep students safe, supported, and connected. At the San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE), Bob leads the Student Support Services and Outdoor Education departments.
Before coming to SDCOE, he worked as a youth minister, licensed marriage and family therapist, adjunct university instructor, school counselor, middle and high school assistant principal, and middle school principal.
Bob was named the 2016 Pupil Services Administrator of the Year for Association of California School Administrators (ACSA) Region 18 and received the 2017-18 Outstanding Service Award from the California Association of Supervisors of Child Welfare & Attendance (CASCWA) – Southern Section. Bob continues to be a proud member of ACSA and CASCWA and serves as Vice-President for CASCWA’s Southern Section.
Sandy Hook Promise will provide “Safety Assessment and Intervention” training to schools at no cost.
Workshop Session Four: Vicente Bravo - Appropriate Disciplinary Actions
Vicente Bravo, Project Director III, from LACOE’s Child Welfare and Attendance (CWA) Unit brings with him expertise and experience gained from having served as a classroom teacher, site and district administrator, and county-level administrator.
Mr. Bravo has presented at local and state conferences sponsored through LACOE, the California Association of Supervisors of Child Welfare and Attendance, the California League of Middle and High Schools, and the Association of California School Administrators, to name a few.
The CWA Unit in the Division of Student Support Services of the Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE) provides support to school districts, parents, students and community members as it relates to the California Education Code and other laws affecting student services and school administration.
Support is provided in the form of workshops, mediation, technical support and publications. Areas of focus include, but are not limited to, student discipline, pupil records, custody of minors, homeless education, foster youth services, compulsory attendance, and truancy reduction. The CWA Unit also processes and hears expulsion and inter-district transfer appeal cases filed by parents.
Mr. Bravo know the “Codes of California” and he is especially aware of the education codes relating to minors. He directly deals with difficult student discipline challenges pertaining to appeals to the Los Angeles County Office of Education. Mr. Bravo is known for the sound advice that he gives to administrators throughout the state when they are facing difficult challenges!

Secret Service Guide for Preventing School Violence Newtown, CT, July 13, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE)
Yesterday the Secret Service released a guide for preventing school violence based on data compiled over the last 20 years by the U.S. Secret Service National Threat Assessment Center. Key findings from the report include recommendations for trained threat assessment teams, training students and staff to report on concerning behaviors, and to have a system in place where reports can be sent anonymously. They also highlighted the “importance of creating safe school climates in which students are empowered to share their concerns.” All of these recommendations are critical to preventing violence in schools. Sandy Hook Promise has already been hard at work for the last few years delivering solutions exactly like the ones recommended in this new report, and are already seeing increasing numbers of interventions as a result.
